Focus

  • Visual identity and interface direction for a live city game
  • Reusable Figma components and mobile UI patterns
  • Map-based and game-status screens designed for use on the move

01

About the project

The Chase is a location-based multiplayer game that turns a city into a live chase. Players take on the role of either an escaper or a chaser, moving through the city using public transport and on foot. I worked with the startup team to develop a visual direction and interface concepts that support fast decisions, clear game states, and an energetic experience on the move.

02

The opportunity

The Chase combines city exploration, public transport, and multiplayer gameplay. Players need to understand their role, follow live game information, and make quick choices while moving through a real urban environment. The interface therefore needed to be clear at a glance, easy to use on a phone, and visually distinctive enough to reflect the tension and energy of a live chase.

03

My role

I collaborated with the startup team on the visual and interface direction for the product.

  • Developing the visual identity and overall design direction
  • Exploring colours, typography, graphic elements, and brand expression
  • Designing core mobile-app screens and interaction states
  • Creating reusable Figma components and UI patterns
  • Building mockups for key moments in the game experience
  • Designing map-based and game-status interface elements
  • Sharing design work with the team and incorporating feedback through an iterative process

04

Design direction

The visual direction needed to feel active, bold, and easy to navigate under time pressure. It uses strong contrast, clear hierarchy, route-inspired visual elements, and a system of reusable components. The design balances two needs: creating a sense of suspense and movement, while keeping essential information readable and actionable during play.

05

Designing for movement

The Chase is used while players are out in the city, so the interface must work in changing, fast-paced situations. Key information needs to be visible quickly, while secondary details should remain available without cluttering the screen.

Clear game states

Make roles, progress, and next actions easy to recognise.

Fast decisions

Use strong visual hierarchy and focused interactions for use on the move.

A cohesive game world

Connect the brand identity, interface components, and map-based gameplay into one recognisable experience.

06

Outcome

The collaboration resulted in a visual identity, reusable Figma component system, and high-fidelity mobile app mockups for The Chase. The project strengthened my experience of designing within a startup context, communicating with a product team, responding to feedback, and translating an early product idea into a coherent and practical mobile interface.

Reflection

This project showed me how important clarity becomes when a mobile product is used beyond a desk or sofa. The interface needs to support attention, orientation, and quick decision-making without losing its personality. It also gave me valuable experience collaborating closely with a startup team and shaping a shared visual direction through ongoing discussion and design iteration.
